At a glance
Quick answer. NCERT publishes 14 subjects' worth of textbooks for Class XII (Class 12) in 2025-26, the second and final CBSE board year + entrance exam year. The Class 12 CBSE board paper sticks strictly to the rationalised NCERT. JEE Main + JEE Advanced 2026 (engineering), NEET-UG 2026 (medical), CUET-UG 2026 (general undergraduate), CLAT (law), NIFT (design) all happen between January and May 2026, overlapping with the board exam window. Standard admission age is 17 years; standard exit age is 18.
Final board year + entrance overlap. Board exams (March-April 2026), JEE Main (Jan + April), NEET-UG (May), CUET-UG (May), JEE Advanced (May), CLAT (Dec 2025), NIFT (Feb) all stack into a 6-month window. Plan study schedule with explicit board-vs-entrance time allocation.

Class 12 is India's most consequential school year. It is the second and final CBSE board-exam year, and it sits directly above the entrance-exam season — JEE Main 2026 and Advanced (engineering), NEET 2026 (medical), CUET (general undergraduate admissions), CLAT (law), and dozens of state-level entrances. Whatever the post-school plan, Class 12 NCERT books are the canonical source.
Class 12 Mathematics (lemh1, lemh2) covers 13 chapters: Relations and Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Matrices, Determinants, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Integrals, Application of Integrals, Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Three-Dimensional Geometry, Linear Programming, and Probability. This is the core JEE 2026 Mathematics syllabus.
Class 12 Physics (leph1, leph2) covers 14 chapters spanning Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction, Alternating Current, EM Waves, Optics, Modern Physics, and Semiconductor Electronics. Communication Systems was removed in the 2022 rationalisation. Class 12 Chemistry (lech1, lech2) has 10 chapters after rationalisation — Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, d- and f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, and the organic series. Solid State, Surface Chemistry, p-Block (partial), Polymers, and Chemistry in Everyday Life chapters were removed; Polymers in particular still appears in NEET 2026 syllabus. Class 12 Biology (lebo1) covers 16 chapters across Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution, Biology and Human Welfare, Biotechnology, and Ecology.
For the CBSE Class 12 board exam, only NCERT-prescribed content is fair game — the board paper sticks strictly to NCERT chapters. Schools may use exemplar problems, RD Sharma, HC Verma, or coaching modules for entrance-exam practice, but the board syllabus is NCERT.
The full Class 12 booklist below covers 14 NCERT subjects spanning Science (PCM, PCMB), Commerce (Accounts, Business Studies, Economics), and Humanities (History, Geography, Pol Sc, Sociology, Psychology). PDFs are free, hot-linked from ncert.nic.in, no signups required.

Class 12 strategy notes:
-
CBSE board exam: sticks strictly to current rationalised NCERT. Master the back-of-chapter exercises and exemplar problems; that's the bulk of preparation needed.
-
JEE/NEET 2026: NTA's syllabi were built against pre-2022 NCERT and continue to test deleted topics. The single biggest mistake aspirants make is treating the rationalised NCERT as sufficient. It is not. See our deleted-syllabus pages for chapter-level reconciliation: /ncert/deleted-syllabus/neet-2026, /ncert/deleted-syllabus/jee-2026.
-
CUET-UG 2026: follows current rationalised NCERT — you can ignore deleted topics for CUET.
-
State engineering and medical exams (KCET, MHT-CET, EAMCET, COMEDK): each follows their own syllabus document; do not assume the latest NCERT covers everything. Always cross-check the official state-board syllabus PDF before exam-prep season.
Class 12 — board + entrance dual-track strategy
Class 12 is the only year where students simultaneously prepare for two entirely different exam systems: the CBSE Class 12 board exam (March-April 2026) and one or more entrance exams (JEE Main January + April + Advanced May; NEET-UG May; CUET-UG May; CLAT December 2025; NIFT February). The two systems test different things and require different preparation styles.
The core mismatch:
- CBSE Class 12 board sticks to the rationalised NCERT. The paper is conceptual + comprehension-driven. Mark distribution per question is generous; partial credit for the right approach is common.
- NEET/JEE/CUET were designed against the pre-2022 NCERT. NTA's 2026 syllabus continues to include several deleted-NCERT topics (Polymers in Chemistry, Reproductive Health subtopics in Biology, parts of Mathematical Reasoning, Communication Systems for some state exams). Question style is rapid MCQ; no partial credit; negative marking penalises guessing.
Practical implication: Your Class 12 NCERT books cover ~80 percent of NEET/JEE/CUET syllabus. The remaining 20 percent must come from supplementary sources — coaching modules, Allen / Aakash / Resonance / FIITJEE bridge material, or pre-2022 NCERT for the deleted topics.
We maintain detailed reconciliation pages: /ncert/deleted-syllabus-neet-2026, /ncert/deleted-syllabus-jee-2026, /ncert/deleted-syllabus-cuet-2026.
Entrance exam timeline 2026 — what's when
January 2026: JEE Main session 1 (typically 24 January - 1 February). NEET-UG syllabus released by NTA (already published; consolidated with 2025 changes). CUET-UG application opens.
February 2026: CBSE Class 12 board sample papers released. Final NEET application deadline (~February 28). NIFT entrance held.
March 2026: CBSE Class 12 board examinations (March 1 - April 5 typical window). JEE Main session 2 application opens. CUET-UG registration deadline.
April 2026: JEE Main session 2 (typically April 1-15). CBSE board exams continue.
May 2026: NEET-UG (typically first Sunday of May). CUET-UG (typically third week of May). JEE Advanced (typically last Sunday of May). NEET counselling registration begins.
June 2026: CBSE Class 12 results announced (typically late May or early June). JEE Advanced results. NEET counselling rounds begin.
July - August 2026: University admissions for general undergraduate (DU, BHU, JMI, JNU via CUET). State engineering counselling. Medical college allotments via NEET (state + AIQ + AIIMS).
Strategic implication: From January onwards, your study schedule must simultaneously cover board syllabus completion AND entrance-exam revision. Most successful aspirants prioritise board syllabus completion by mid-February (so school exams are stress-free), then pivot to dedicated NEET/JEE/CUET prep through March-May.
Common Class 12 mistakes parents make
Mistake 1: Treating board prep and entrance prep as substitutes. Fatal error. The board paper rewards conceptual depth + structured writing; entrance exams reward speed + pattern recognition + numerical accuracy. Neglecting one for the other costs marks in the neglected exam disproportionately.
Mistake 2: Switching coaching institutes mid-year. Class 12 starting students sometimes leave coaching they began at Class 11 'because results aren't showing'. The transition costs 2-3 weeks of recovery time, plus lost familiarity with the institute's question patterns. Unless the coaching is genuinely poor (verifiable by checking class size, faculty turnover, peer outcomes), stick with what you started.
Mistake 3: Ignoring practical work and internal assessment marks. CBSE Class 12 board has a 30 mark internal/practical component per Science subject (20 mark + 10 mark for some). Skipping practical work to focus on entrance exam prep can drop the overall percentage by 5-10 points — often the difference between a percentile rank category that affects college choice.
Mistake 4: Last-minute switch to a 'silver bullet' study material in March-April. By March of Class 12, your study material set should be locked. Adding a new book or coaching module in the final 8 weeks is a stress multiplier, not a marks multiplier. The NCERT-Exemplar foundation you've built since June is what carries through the board exam.
Mistake 5: Underestimating the rest-and-recovery cycle. In the final 12 weeks, sleep less than 6 hours/night and your processing speed drops 15-20 percent. Many students who 'studied 14 hours/day in February' actually score lower than those who studied 8-10 hours with proper sleep. Sleep is preparation.
Backup options if Class 12 results aren't what you hoped
Improvement examination (CBSE supplementary): if a single subject in Class 12 board falls short, CBSE allows reappearing for that subject in the next academic cycle (typically July-August following the May exam). The improved score replaces the lower one for the marksheet, but the original year remains the original year (no second 12th year). Useful for medical/engineering aspirants who need a specific subject score for entrance qualification.
Repeat year (private candidate): Available through CBSE-affiliated private institutions and NIOS. Allows a full re-attempt of Class 12 the following year as a private candidate. Common path for NEET/JEE droppers — the dedicated drop year is structured around entrance prep with private Class 12 board as a fallback. Roughly 30 percent of NEET/JEE finalists are drop-year students.
Direct entrance qualification routes:
- NEET/JEE — eligibility requires passing Class 12 with PCM/PCMB; the actual rank is decided by the entrance exam alone. Class 12 percentage matters only for AIIMS/JIPMER (now NEET-anchored), state-level cut-offs, and a few private institutions.
- CUET — combines Class 12 score (varies by participating university) with the CUET entrance score. Most central universities now use CUET-only for general undergraduate admission.
- CLAT (legal) — 5-year integrated law programs use CLAT only; Class 12 percentage is a minimum-eligibility check (typically 45-50 percent).
- NIFT/UCEED (design) — entirely entrance-driven; portfolio quality matters more than Class 12 marks.
Vocational and certificate routes: Skills-based pathways (CA Foundation, ACCA, NIIT/Aptech IT certificates, design-school diplomas, polytechnic) have entry points that bypass the standard undergraduate path entirely. Often higher employment rates than generalist BA/BSc paths within 3-4 years of completion.

Three ways students and parents use this page
As a study reference. Bookmark it on your phone, share the URL with your child or study group, and refer back during the academic year. The page structure is intentionally stable — same hierarchy, same sources, same labels — so revisiting it weeks later doesn't require re-orienting yourself.
As a verification anchor. When a coaching brochure or third-party education site claims something about NCERT — what's in / what's out / what's coming — cross-check it here. Every claim on this page links back to the official NCERT, CBSE, or NTA source. If a third-party claim contradicts what's here, follow our source link first; we cite the canonical document.
As a navigation hub. Each page links up (to the parent class hub or NCERT root) and across (to adjacent chapters, subjects, or related deletion pages). The hierarchy is designed to support depth-first browsing — start broad, drill down, and pop back up. Use the breadcrumbs at the top of every page to navigate the hierarchy without losing context.
If you're a teacher or counsellor, this page is also designed to print cleanly to a single PDF — no popups, no distracting ads, no required logins.
Beyond NCERT — other free Government of India learning resources
NCERT is the canonical syllabus, but it isn't the only free educational resource the Indian government publishes. Each of the platforms below complements NCERT for a specific use case.
ePathshala (epathshala.nic.in) is the Ministry of Education's digital reader for NCERT books. It hosts the same PDFs as ncert.nic.in but with an enhanced flipbook interface that's easier to read on phones. Use it when you want a screen-friendly reading experience rather than a download. Note: ePathshala does not host any content not also available on ncert.nic.in — both are sourced from the same NCERT-published files.
DIKSHA (diksha.gov.in) is the Ministry of Education's video-and-interactive content platform. It curates chapter-aligned videos (some from NCERT's own YouTube channel, some third-party), interactive quizzes, and 'energised textbook' augmentations — QR codes inside printed NCERT books that link to DIKSHA media. Use DIKSHA when you want video reinforcement of a chapter you've already read; it's not a substitute for the textbook.
Swayam (swayam.gov.in) hosts MOOCs (massive open online courses) from IITs, IIMs, IISc, and other Indian institutions of national importance. Most courses target undergraduates, but some target Class 11-12 with dedicated CBSE-aligned content. Genuinely useful for self-driven Class 11-12 students; the certificates are NPTEL/UGC-recognised.
Swayam Prabha (swayamprabha.gov.in) is a 32-channel DTH education broadcast that runs 24×7. Schedules align with the academic year. Useful for students in low-connectivity areas where streaming video is unreliable.
NCERT Official YouTube (youtube.com/@NCERTOFFICIAL) hosts chapter-aligned video lessons authored by NCERT-empanelled teachers. Free, embeddable, and authoritative — these are the videos we curate on our chapter pages where available.
Editorial policy and how this page is maintained
Every NCERT-related page on GetSchoolsInfo is built from the same editorial policy, summarised here for transparency:
Source-of-truth. All chapter PDFs and rationalisation booklets are hot-linked directly to ncert.nic.in — the official Government of India publisher of NCERT content. We do not host PDFs on our own CDN, we do not redirect through ads, and we do not wrap NCERT links behind a registration wall. If NCERT issues a corrected or updated PDF, the link auto-refreshes from NCERT's CDN — you always get the latest version.
No commercial upsell. We do not sell or promote commercial guidebooks (RD Sharma, Lakhmir Singh, Together with..., Educart, Oswaal, Arihant). For CBSE board preparation, NCERT textbooks plus NCERT Exemplar Problems are sufficient; commercial books are supplementary at best. For JEE / NEET / CUET preparation, coaching modules add problem volume but are not a replacement for NCERT mastery.
Update cadence. Class-level and subject-level pages are reviewed annually before the academic year start (March-April). Chapter-level PDF link health is checked monthly via automated cron. The dateModified field at the bottom of every page reflects the most recent content edit; the inside cover of each NCERT PDF carries the print-edition year.
Verification. Every factual claim on this page can be cross-checked against the official NCERT rationalisation booklet (BookletClass{N}.pdf on ncert.nic.in), the latest CBSE Sample Paper PDF (cbseacademic.nic.in), or the relevant NTA bulletin (NEET/JEE/CUET 2026 syllabus documents). Disagreements between NCERT and NTA are explicitly flagged via our deleted-syllabus reconciliation pages — we do not paper over the gap.
