CUET-UG 2026: NCERT Rationalisation Impact
On this page
TL;DR for CUET-UG 2026 aspirants: the CUET-UG syllabus aligns closely with the current rationalised NCERT (post-2022). Almost all topics removed from current NCERT books are also removed from CUET — meaning the burden of carrying old NCERT material is much lower than it is for NEET or JEE.
The Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate admissions (CUET-UG) is administered by the National Testing Agency for admission to ~250 universities including the Central Universities, IGNOU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, Visva-Bharati, JNU, and many others. Unlike NEET and JEE — both of which carry forward pre-2022 NCERT content in their syllabi — CUET-UG is explicitly aligned to the current Class 12 NCERT.
This means: if you are preparing for CUET-UG 2026, you can study from the latest NCERT 2025-26 textbooks and not worry about coverage gaps from rationalisation. The handful of edge cases are flagged below.
CUET-UG 2026 — alignment with current NCERT
| Subject | NCERT alignment status | Action for CUET aspirants |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics / Applied Mathematics | Fully aligned — current NCERT Class 12 | Use rationalised NCERT only. Mathematical Reasoning is dropped from both. |
| Physics | Fully aligned — current NCERT Class 12 | Communication Systems dropped from CUET as well. Skip safely. |
| Chemistry | Fully aligned — most chapters retained | Polymers and Solid State partially retained in CUET — verify against the latest NTA CUET syllabus PDF. |
| Biology | Fully aligned — current NCERT Class 12 | Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production removed from both — safe to skip for CUET (NEET still tests it). |
| History / Geography / Political Science | Aligned with current NCERT | Use current NCERT. CUET draws directly from the rationalised chapters. |
| Economics — Microeconomics + Macroeconomics | Aligned | Use current Class 12 NCERT Economics. |
| Accountancy | Aligned | Same as Class 12 board content. |
| Business Studies | Aligned | Same as Class 12 board content. |
| English / Hindi / regional languages | Aligned with current NCERT readers | Use current Class 12 readers (Flamingo, Vistas for English; Aroh, Vitan for Hindi). |
Why CUET differs from NEET / JEE
CUET-UG was designed in 2022, after the NCERT rationalisation. NTA built the CUET syllabus directly on the rationalised NCERT — they didn't have to retrofit a legacy syllabus. This is the opposite situation from NEET and JEE, where the pre-existing syllabus pre-dates rationalisation and continues to test deleted topics.
For CUET aspirants this is a structural advantage: the time you'd otherwise spend covering pre-2022 NCERT material can go to CUET-specific test prep — the General Test (numerical ability, mental ability, general knowledge) and language proficiency sections of CUET, which together carry significant weight.
Always verify: the official CUET-UG 2026 syllabus is in the NTA CUET-UG information bulletin (released February 2026). If anything in our table contradicts the bulletin, the bulletin wins.
