PM Schools for Rising India is not a new school chain — it is a ₹27,360 crore, five-year programme that picks existing government schools and upgrades them across six pillars to show what the National Education Policy 2020 looks like in real classrooms.
Cabinet-approved on 7 September 2022, the scheme runs FY 2022-23 to FY 2026-27. The Centre contributes ₹18,128 crore; states match the rest. After Phase 1 (2023) selected 6,207 schools, cumulative selections through Phases 1–4 stand at roughly 12,079 schools across 32 States/UTs and the KVS/NVS networks.
What actually changes at a PM SHRI school
The scheme treats school transformation as a system problem, not a building problem. Every selected school is upgraded across all six pillars — not just the one with the most visible needs.
Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment
NEP 2020-aligned 5+3+3+4 stage structure replaces the older 10+2 framing. Foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) get dedicated periods in early grades. Arts-integrated and experiential learning replace rote recitation. The Holistic Progress Card replaces single-grade report cards.
Access and Infrastructure
ICT labs, smart classrooms, libraries, science labs, sports facilities, ramps, CWSN-friendly design — and "green" features such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting, kitchen gardens. Every PM SHRI school is meant to be physically dignified.
Human Resources and School Leadership
Teachers go through NISHTHA online training. School leaders attend capacity-building programmes. Each PM SHRI school is meant to mentor neighbouring schools — the "innovation hub" idea.
Inclusive Practices and Gender Equity
Targeted outreach to SC/ST/OBC families, girls, and CWSN. Mother-tongue medium support in early grades. Equity-focused grants for schools serving historically underrepresented communities.
Management, Monitoring and Governance
Direct funding via PFMS to school accounts. Real-time UDISE+ tracking. Third-party concurrent evaluation. State Implementation Committee chaired by State Education Secretary keeps states accountable.
Beneficiary Satisfaction
Periodic feedback from students, parents, and teachers feeds the School Quality Assessment Framework (SQAF). Annual satisfaction reports inform whether a school keeps its PM SHRI status.
“It is not about building new schools. It is about ensuring that the school your child already attends becomes the school you wish they had.”
— Framing of the PM SHRI scheme, Department of School Education and Literacy
How a school becomes PM SHRI
The challenge method — a three-stage funnel from MoU to inspection-confirmed selection. Schools self-apply; UDISE+ data is the qualifying gate.
State signs MoU
The State or UT signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Centre committing to implement NEP 2020 in its schools. Without the MoU, no schools in that state can compete.
UDISE+ filter
Eligible schools are identified from UDISE+ data against a published minimum benchmark — infrastructure, learning, governance indicators must clear baseline thresholds.
Challenge + inspection
Candidate schools self-apply through the State portal. Urban schools must score ≥70%, rural ≥60%. Physical inspection by State/KVS/NVS teams. Final approval by an Expert Committee chaired by Secretary, DoSEL.
PM SHRI cuts across school networks
Most PM SHRI schools are state-government schools, but central-government networks are dramatically over-represented. Almost every JNV is PM SHRI. Seven in ten KVs are.

Common questions about PM SHRI
Is PM SHRI a new school or a tag on existing schools?+
A tag, not a new chain. Existing government schools — central, state, local body, KV, Navodaya, tribal welfare — are selected and upgraded across six pillars. The school keeps its existing affiliation.
How are PM SHRI schools selected?+
Three stages: (1) the State signs an MoU with the Centre committing to NEP 2020; (2) eligible schools are filtered from UDISE+ data against a minimum benchmark; (3) candidate schools compete via a "challenge method" — urban schools must score ≥70%, rural ≥60% — verified by physical inspection and approved by an Expert Committee chaired by Secretary, DoSEL.
What does it cost to attend?+
The same as the underlying school. A PM SHRI government primary school remains free; a PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya follows the standard KV fee structure; a PM SHRI tribal welfare school remains free with hostel benefits.
How is PM SHRI different from PM POSHAN or Samagra Shiksha?+
PM POSHAN is the mid-day-meal scheme. Samagra Shiksha is the integrated K-12 funding programme covering all government schools. PM SHRI is school-level transformation — far fewer schools, deeper per-school intervention to demonstrate NEP 2020 in practice.
What is the funding split between Centre and State?+
Most States and UTs with legislature: 60:40 (Centre:State). North-Eastern States, Himalayan States, J&K: 90:10. UTs without legislature: 100% Central.
What is the total budget?+
₹27,360 crore over five years (FY 2022-23 to FY 2026-27). Central share: ₹18,128 crore.
How many phases of selection have happened?+
Phase 1 in 2023 selected 6,207 schools across 27 States/UTs plus KVS/NVS. Subsequent phases have brought the cumulative selected count to ~12,079 across 32 States/UTs. The official MoE dashboard reports ~13,085 sanctioned; we publish 12,175 from our UDISE 2024-25 snapshot — the gap reflects post-snapshot Phase 3/4 sanctions.
Are private schools eligible?+
No. PM SHRI is restricted to schools managed by Central Govt, State/UT Govt, or local bodies. Aided schools and unaided private schools are not in the eligibility pool.
Can a school lose its PM SHRI tag?+
In principle yes — the scheme provides for periodic concurrent evaluation and possible de-selection for schools that fail the School Quality Assessment Framework. In practice, no large-scale de-tagging has been reported as of mid-2026.
How can I verify a school is genuinely PM SHRI?+
Cross-check on pmshri.education.gov.in or on our directory. Boards displayed at school gates are not authoritative if they do not also appear on the portal.
What happens after FY 2026-27 when the scheme ends?+
Per current policy guidance, States and UTs are expected to take over operational maintenance of PM SHRI schools after the five-year period. There has been no announcement of a formal Phase-5 or extension as of mid-2026.
How can my child get into a PM SHRI school?+
You don't apply to PM SHRI directly — you apply to the underlying school. If you want a PM SHRI school, find one near you using the directory below, then follow that school's admission process.
