At a glance

Quick answer. NCERT publishes 5 core textbooks for Class IX (Class 9) in the 2025-26 academic year: Mathematics (12 chapters), Science (13 chapters), Beehive (English literature), Ganga (Hindi NCF-SE 2024-25, replaced Kshitij/Sparsh), and Sharada (Sanskrit). Class 9 SocSci replaced 4 books with single integrated Gateway to Social Science (16 chapters). Standard admission age is 14 years. Class 9 is the first year of secondary stage — no formal board exam yet, but Class 10 boards build directly on Class 9.

Class 9 SocSci consolidation. NCERT replaced the four-book Class 9 SocSci set (History/Civics/Geography/Economics) with a single integrated Gateway to Social Science (Parts 1+2) for 2026-27. Confirm your school's booklist matches the current NCERT publication.

Class 9 begins the secondary school stage and CBSE-style internal evaluation. The NCERT booklist for Class 9 has not changed in headline structure since the 2022 rationalisation, but specific topics inside Mathematics and Science were trimmed. Class 9 Mathematics has 12 chapters (down from 15) — Constructions, Areas of Parallelograms and Triangles (merged into other chapters), and Probability (relocated to Class 10) were removed in 2022.

The Class 9 Science book is one combined volume of 12 chapters interleaving Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Class 9 doesn't yet split into separate Physics/Chemistry/Biology — that happens at Class 11. Social Science at Class 9 expands to four parallel sub-books — India and the Contemporary World - I (History), Contemporary India - I (Geography), Democratic Politics - I (Civics), and Economics.

English NCERT at Class 9 has three components — Beehive (main reader), Moments (supplementary reader), and Words and Expressions - I (workbook). Hindi has Kshitij, Sparsh, Kritika, and Sanchayan. Sanskrit covers Shemushi, Vyakaranavithi, and Abhyaswaan Bhav for schools that include it.

There is no Class 9 board examination — assessment is school-internal — but the CBSE Class 10 board paper draws heavily on Class 9 foundations. Many concepts (Number Systems, Polynomials, Atoms and Molecules) reappear directly in Class 11 NCERT and entrance-exam content. The full booklist below covers every Class 9 NCERT volume with direct PDFs hot-linked from ncert.nic.in.

Class 9 syllabus changes — the 2022 NCERT rationalisation removed ~10 percent of Class 9 content across Maths and Science. For a chapter-level diff against the older 15-chapter Maths book and the 14-chapter Science book, see /ncert/syllabus/old-vs-new/class-9. If your child is using a printed textbook from 2021 or earlier, it will include chapters NCERT has since removed; the PDFs below are the current rationalised editions.

Class 9 — secondary stage transition

Class 9 is the first year of the secondary stage in Indian schooling. The shift from upper primary (Class 6-8) to secondary is the most significant academic step-up most students experience: subject specialisation deepens, the language of instruction (English) is expected fluently across all subjects, written-answer length increases sharply, and assessment becomes meaningfully formal — though Class 9 itself has no external board exam.

While there is no formal board examination at Class 9, schools typically run two formal terms plus periodic unit tests with rigorous moderation. Class 9 marks are not on the CBSE board marksheet, but they appear on the school transcript and are used for stream-decision conversations between the child and the school counsellor in Class 10. Strong Class 9 marks signal academic readiness and influence how the school positions stream-choice guidance.

The 2022 NCERT rationalisation reduced Class 9 content by roughly 10-15 percent across Maths and Science. Three full Class 9 Maths chapters were removed (Constructions, Areas of Parallelograms and Triangles, Probability — the latter relocated to Class 10), and Why Do We Fall Ill was relocated from Class 9 Science to Class 10. The current Maths book has 12 chapters; the current Science book has 12 chapters. State boards that follow NCERT have largely adopted the rationalisation.

Why Class 9 matters more than parents typically realise

Class 10 board exam preparation is not a 12-month sprint — it's a 24-month accumulation. The Class 10 board paper draws roughly 30-40 percent of its question patterns from Class 9 foundations: trigonometric identities (Class 10) build on Class 9 lines, angles, and triangles; quadratic equations build on Class 9 polynomial work; coordinate geometry extends Class 9 cartesian basics. A weak Class 9 Maths foundation means relearning the foundation in Class 10 — under board-year time pressure.

The same is true for Class 9 Science: Class 10 Light and Electricity chapters depend on Class 9 Motion and Force; Class 10 Carbon and Compounds depends on Class 9 Atoms and Molecules; Class 10 Heredity depends on Class 9 Cell and Tissues. Treating Class 9 as a 'pre-board year' that doesn't really matter is a common parent error that compounds in February-March of Class 10.

Practical implication for parents:

  1. Solve every Class 9 NCERT exercise during the year — not just the ones the school assigns. The Exemplar problems are also free at ncert.nic.in and are an excellent depth-test.
  2. Keep Class 9 textbooks for Class 10 reference. During Class 10, your child will frequently need to refer back to Class 9 Lines and Angles, Polynomials, Atoms and Molecules, etc.
  3. Read English literature broadly. Class 9 English (Beehive + Moments) introduces literary analysis. Wide reading habit built in Class 9 = effortless Class 10 board English.
  4. Don't skip Hindi/regional language preparation. CBSE Class 10 board Hindi is rigorous; many students treat it as an afterthought and lose 10-15 marks unnecessarily.

Three ways students and parents use this page

As a study reference. Bookmark it on your phone, share the URL with your child or study group, and refer back during the academic year. The page structure is intentionally stable — same hierarchy, same sources, same labels — so revisiting it weeks later doesn't require re-orienting yourself.

As a verification anchor. When a coaching brochure or third-party education site claims something about NCERT — what's in / what's out / what's coming — cross-check it here. Every claim on this page links back to the official NCERT, CBSE, or NTA source. If a third-party claim contradicts what's here, follow our source link first; we cite the canonical document.

As a navigation hub. Each page links up (to the parent class hub or NCERT root) and across (to adjacent chapters, subjects, or related deletion pages). The hierarchy is designed to support depth-first browsing — start broad, drill down, and pop back up. Use the breadcrumbs at the top of every page to navigate the hierarchy without losing context.

If you're a teacher or counsellor, this page is also designed to print cleanly to a single PDF — no popups, no distracting ads, no required logins.

Beyond NCERT — other free Government of India learning resources

NCERT is the canonical syllabus, but it isn't the only free educational resource the Indian government publishes. Each of the platforms below complements NCERT for a specific use case.

ePathshala (epathshala.nic.in) is the Ministry of Education's digital reader for NCERT books. It hosts the same PDFs as ncert.nic.in but with an enhanced flipbook interface that's easier to read on phones. Use it when you want a screen-friendly reading experience rather than a download. Note: ePathshala does not host any content not also available on ncert.nic.in — both are sourced from the same NCERT-published files.

DIKSHA (diksha.gov.in) is the Ministry of Education's video-and-interactive content platform. It curates chapter-aligned videos (some from NCERT's own YouTube channel, some third-party), interactive quizzes, and 'energised textbook' augmentations — QR codes inside printed NCERT books that link to DIKSHA media. Use DIKSHA when you want video reinforcement of a chapter you've already read; it's not a substitute for the textbook.

Swayam (swayam.gov.in) hosts MOOCs (massive open online courses) from IITs, IIMs, IISc, and other Indian institutions of national importance. Most courses target undergraduates, but some target Class 11-12 with dedicated CBSE-aligned content. Genuinely useful for self-driven Class 11-12 students; the certificates are NPTEL/UGC-recognised.

Swayam Prabha (swayamprabha.gov.in) is a 32-channel DTH education broadcast that runs 24×7. Schedules align with the academic year. Useful for students in low-connectivity areas where streaming video is unreliable.

NCERT Official YouTube (youtube.com/@NCERTOFFICIAL) hosts chapter-aligned video lessons authored by NCERT-empanelled teachers. Free, embeddable, and authoritative — these are the videos we curate on our chapter pages where available.

Editorial policy and how this page is maintained

Every NCERT-related page on GetSchoolsInfo is built from the same editorial policy, summarised here for transparency:

Source-of-truth. All chapter PDFs and rationalisation booklets are hot-linked directly to ncert.nic.in — the official Government of India publisher of NCERT content. We do not host PDFs on our own CDN, we do not redirect through ads, and we do not wrap NCERT links behind a registration wall. If NCERT issues a corrected or updated PDF, the link auto-refreshes from NCERT's CDN — you always get the latest version.

No commercial upsell. We do not sell or promote commercial guidebooks (RD Sharma, Lakhmir Singh, Together with..., Educart, Oswaal, Arihant). For CBSE board preparation, NCERT textbooks plus NCERT Exemplar Problems are sufficient; commercial books are supplementary at best. For JEE / NEET / CUET preparation, coaching modules add problem volume but are not a replacement for NCERT mastery.

Update cadence. Class-level and subject-level pages are reviewed annually before the academic year start (March-April). Chapter-level PDF link health is checked monthly via automated cron. The dateModified field at the bottom of every page reflects the most recent content edit; the inside cover of each NCERT PDF carries the print-edition year.

Verification. Every factual claim on this page can be cross-checked against the official NCERT rationalisation booklet (BookletClass{N}.pdf on ncert.nic.in), the latest CBSE Sample Paper PDF (cbseacademic.nic.in), or the relevant NTA bulletin (NEET/JEE/CUET 2026 syllabus documents). Disagreements between NCERT and NTA are explicitly flagged via our deleted-syllabus reconciliation pages — we do not paper over the gap.
