TL;DR. CISCE is an autonomous national board that conducts the ICSE (Class 10), ISC (Class 12) and CVE vocational examinations. Originally set up in 1958 by the University of Cambridge to administer the Cambridge School Certificate in India, the council was Indianised in 1967 and is now headquartered in New Delhi. CISCE is known for English-medium rigour, longer language and literature papers, heavier internal-assessment weight than CBSE, and a private-school-heavy network concentrated in metros and tier-1 cities. Pass percentages typically run 96–99%.

Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations conducts the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) — Class 10 for Class 10 students. The exam is the legal terminus of compulsory schooling in India under the RTE Act and serves three purposes simultaneously: it certifies a student's secondary education, gates streamed entry into Class 11, and feeds equivalence checks for international transfers.
Subjects: 6 subjects: English (Group I, compulsory) + a Second Language + History/Civics & Geography (compulsory) + 2 to 3 elective subjects from Group II (Maths, Science, Commercial Studies, Economics, etc.) + 1 subject from Group III (Computer Applications, Physical Education, Art, Cookery, Performing Arts, etc.). Language options: English is compulsory at Group I. The Second Language is chosen from a list of 20+ Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Odia, Assamese and several modern foreign languages including French, German and Spanish).. Per-paper duration: 2 to 3 hours per main paper depending on subject (English Language is 2 hr; Literature, History/Civics & Geography are 2 hr each; Maths and Science papers are 2.5 to 3 hr). Passing marks: 33% aggregate per subject (combined external + internal assessment). English must be passed to be eligible for the Pass Certificate..
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| External theory paper | 80 marks · 2 to 3 hour written exam (paper length varies by subject) |
| Internal assessment / coursework | 20 marks (school-internal projects, lab work and assignments — moderated by CISCE) |
| Group III subjects | 100 marks — typically 50 marks external + 50 marks internal practical/project (no external theory for many Group III options) |
| English (Group I) | Two papers — Paper 1 (Language) and Paper 2 (Literature in English) — each 80 marks external + 20 IA, considered together |
9-point grading scale (1 to 9): grades 1 and 2 indicate Very Good, 3 and 4 Distinction-band, 5 and 6 Pass with Credit, 7 Pass, 8 and 9 Failure. Marks are reported alongside grades on the marksheet — both percentages and grade values are visible.
CISCE does not run a compartment / supplementary examination at ICSE. A candidate who fails 1 subject must re-sit the entire ICSE the following year, although they may apply to be marked Pass-Eligible against subjects already cleared at 33%+ (the council's "best-of" rule applies only to admission into ISC, not to the Pass Certificate itself).
ICSE Class 10 pass percentage was 99.47% in 2024, 98.94% in 2023, 99.97% in 2022 (special COVID policy), and 96.56% in 2020. Approximately 2.4 lakh candidates registered in 2024. Girls historically out-perform boys by 1–2 percentage points.
For Class 12 students, CISCE runs the Indian School Certificate (ISC) — Class 12. This is the gate to undergraduate admissions, scholarship eligibility, and most foreign-university applications routed via NESO/equivalence committees.
Streams offered: Science (PCM, PCB, PCMB), Commerce, Humanities (Arts). Core subjects: English (compulsory) + 3 elective subjects (minimum) or 4 electives (maximum). Most students take 5 papers in total: English + 4 electives, allowing the lowest score to be dropped under best-of-four for many university admissions.. Per-paper duration: 3 hours per theory paper; practicals are 3 hours conducted at the school by an external examiner appointed by CISCE. Passing marks: 40% in each individual subject (higher than CBSE's 33%) and pass in English is mandatory for the Pass Certificate..
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| External theory paper | 70 or 80 marks (subject-dependent) · 3-hour written exam |
| Practical / project | 20 or 30 marks — externally evaluated for laboratory subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Biotechnology), internally evaluated with external moderation for Commerce and Arts projects |
| English Paper 1 + Paper 2 | Language (3 hr, 80 marks) + Literature in English (3 hr, 80 marks) — both compulsory; total English score is averaged |
Marks are reported as percentages on the ISC certificate; grades are NOT printed on the marksheet for ISC (unlike ICSE). University admissions use raw percentages directly. CISCE does not apply moderation — what you score on the paper is what appears on the certificate.
Practicals are externally evaluated for all science subjects at ISC. The external examiner is appointed by CISCE from a panel of qualified teachers from other affiliated schools. Project work in Commerce and Humanities is internally evaluated, but a sample is moderated externally each year — projects falling outside the moderation band can have marks revised.
ISC Class 12 pass percentage was 98.19% in 2024, 96.93% in 2023, 99.38% in 2022 (COVID policy) and 96.84% in 2020. Approximately 1 lakh candidates registered in 2024. Pass percentages are consistently among the highest of any Indian board.
| Entity | Recognition status |
|---|---|
| All Indian central universities (DU, JNU, BHU, Jamia, etc.) | Direct recognition; ISC marksheet treated at par with CBSE Class 12 for UG admissions |
| IITs / NITs / IIITs (via JEE) | Recognised; ISC Class 12 result accepted for the 75% / 65% (SC-ST) eligibility floor for IIT seat allocation |
| AIIMS / NEET medical colleges | Recognised; ISC marks used as eligibility floor (50% for general, 40% for reserved categories) |
| CLAT / national law universities | ISC English literature is highly regarded; ICSE/ISC students are over-represented in NLU intakes proportional to board size |
| US universities (UG admissions) | Accepted; ICSE and ISC are widely respected for English fluency and treated equivalent to CBSE on transcript conversion |
| UK universities (UCAS) | ISC accepted for direct entry to most UK universities; some prefer ISC over other Indian boards because of the longer English Literature paper |
| Australian universities (TAC) |
If you're optimising for downstream university or visa fit, recognition is the single most important field on this whole page. A board's classroom culture matters less than whether your child's transcript is accepted at the doors they want to walk through five years from now.
Affiliation is the legal recognition that lets a school issue CISCE-validated certificates. For CISCE, the process at a glance:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | School must be a registered society / trust / Section 8 company (not-for-profit). Minimum 2 acres land in non-metros (1 acre relaxed for metros under specific conditions), trained teachers including a minimum number with English-medium qualifications, full set of science labs, a library with 3,000+ titles, and English as the primary medium of instruction. |
| Fee range (₹) | ₹50,000 application fee + ₹5,00,000 one-time initial affiliation fee for new schools. Renewal fee is approximately ₹1,00,000 every 5 years. Schools also pay per-candidate examination fees each year. |
| Renewal cycle | 5 years (renewal applications open 12 months before expiry; CISCE conducts a fresh inspection at each renewal cycle) |
Key steps:
A school's affiliation status is what you, as a parent, should ask for in writing — not a verbal claim. The affiliation number is published on https://www.cisce.org; that's the canonical source.
The pass-percentage trend below is compiled from each year's official board notification. Year-on-year shifts are usually driven by syllabus restoration (post-COVID), tightening of internal-assessment caps, or changes to passing rules — not raw cohort ability.
| Year | Class 10 pass % | Class 12 pass % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 99.47% | 98.19% |
| 2023 | 98.94% | 96.93% |
| 2022 | 99.97% (special policy — COVID) | 99.38% (special policy — COVID) |
| 2021 | 99.98% (special policy — COVID) | 99.76% (special policy — COVID) |
| 2020 | 96.56% | 96.84% |
Treat the numbers as a direction-of-travel signal. A 1–2% YoY swing is ordinary. A double-digit jump or drop almost always tracks a known policy change in that academic year.
We write this section the same way for every board because the question every parent actually asks is "does this board fit my kid", not "is this board good in absolute terms". Both lists are short on purpose.
Strengths
Limitations
There are three ways to verify a school's CISCE affiliation that don't require trusting the school's own marketing material:
A real school's CISCE affiliation number is non-secret and freely shareable. If a school refuses to give you the number in writing, that's a flag.
Different rather than uniformly harder. ICSE has a wider syllabus and longer, essay-style answers; English Literature in particular involves 80 marks of analytical writing across two papers. CBSE has a narrower syllabus with crisper answers and more multiple-choice questions in recent years. ICSE's higher passing mark at ISC (40% vs CBSE 33% at Class 12) and absence of a compartment exam at Class 10 also make ICSE feel stricter. Students strong in English and willing to write long answers usually find ICSE friendlier; students who like compact problem-solving find CBSE friendlier. Pass percentages are similar — both in the high 90s.
ICSE's design philosophy weights consistent learning higher than a single board exam. The 20 marks of IA per subject (lab work, projects, oral assessments, portfolios) means a student who works steadily through the year is rewarded; a one-day-bad-day candidate has 80% of the marks already locked in. CISCE moderates IA scores externally each year — schools that inflate IA face mark scaling. The IA structure is also why ICSE Class 10 pass percentages tend to be higher than CBSE's.
Five papers in total: English (compulsory, two papers averaged) plus 3 elective subjects (minimum) or 4 electives (maximum). Most students take 4 electives so they can drop the lowest under university best-of-four rules. Streams are flexible — there is no hard "Science", "Commerce" or "Arts" stream label on the certificate; you simply pick a valid combination of electives. A student can mix Economics with Physics and Mathematics, for example, which is harder to do at CBSE.
Yes. ISC Class 12 results count for the 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD) eligibility floor mandated by JoSAA for IIT seats. The ISC certificate is treated equivalent to CBSE Class 12 for all centrally-funded technical institutions. Students do, however, need to clear JEE Mains and JEE Advanced separately — those exams are based on the NCERT/CBSE syllabus, so ISC students typically supplement their preparation with NCERT books for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 11 and 12.
No, ISC English is significantly more demanding. ISC sets two separate English papers — Language (essay, comprehension, grammar) and Literature in English (Shakespeare, modern poetry, novels and drama analysed in depth) — each worth 80 external marks plus IA. CBSE has one English paper that combines both at a lighter literature load. This is why ICSE/ISC graduates are over-represented in liberal arts, law and journalism programmes globally, and why some UK universities specifically note ISC English as preferred preparation.
CISCE does not run a compartment / supplementary exam at ICSE. A student who fails 1 subject must re-sit the entire ICSE in the next examination cycle, although the board will mark previously cleared subjects as Pass-Eligible. Some students enrol with NIOS to clear the failed subject as a private candidate while continuing into Class 11, but this depends on the receiving school's policy on mixed transcripts. The lack of a compartment route is a real downside — at CBSE, a single-subject failure can be cleared in July of the same year.
Two checks. First, search the school name on the official CISCE School Directory at cisce.org/school-directory.aspx — every affiliated school is listed with its full code. Second, ask the school to share its CISCE affiliation code in writing and verify it on the same directory. Cross-check on getschoolsinfo.com/board/cisce — every CISCE school in our index is matched against UDISE+ government records. Refusal to provide an affiliation code in writing should be treated as a red flag.
Marginally, in specific contexts. UK universities and US liberal-arts colleges sometimes note ISC favourably because of the heavier English Literature load and the 40% pass mark. For STEM admissions, the difference is negligible — universities convert percentages to GPA equivalents and look at consistent high marks regardless of board. The bigger admissions factor is your child's actual aggregate (90%+ across both boards opens most doors) and the SAT/ACT/AP additions, not the board itself.
Yes, two stages, available within roughly 21 days of result declaration. First, Recheck — addition of marks is verified for ₹1,000 per subject. Second, Re-evaluation — the answer script is re-marked for ₹1,000 per subject; CISCE only revises a mark if the difference exceeds a fixed threshold (usually 5 marks). Photocopies of evaluated answer books are also available on request for an additional fee. Marks can go up or down on re-evaluation. The typical revision rate is 1–3% of submitted requests.
A practical heuristic: choose CISCE if your child enjoys English Literature, project work and longer essay answers, and if you live in a metro where good ICSE schools exist nearby. Choose CBSE if you anticipate inter-city transfers, are targeting JEE/NEET coaching from Class 9 onwards, or live in a tier-2 / tier-3 city with limited CISCE options. For foreign undergraduate ambitions, both boards are accepted; ISC has a slight edge for liberal arts, CBSE has a slight edge for STEM. The school's teaching quality matters more than the board label — visit, speak to recent graduates, and check the alumni outcomes.
