TL;DR. CBSE is India's largest centrally-run school board, conducting the All India Secondary School Examination (Class 10) and All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class 12). Founded 1962, headquartered in Delhi and run by the Ministry of Education, it follows NCERT-aligned syllabi, uses a 9-point grading scale at Class 10, awards percentages at Class 12, and is recognised by every Indian central university plus most foreign universities through standard transcript equivalence. CBSE is the default choice for transfer-prone families and competitive-exam-bound students.

Central Board of Secondary Education conducts the All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) — Class 10 for Class 10 students. The exam is the legal terminus of compulsory schooling in India under the RTE Act and serves three purposes simultaneously: it certifies a student's secondary education, gates streamed entry into Class 11, and feeds equivalence checks for international transfers.
Subjects: 5 mandatory subjects (2 languages + Mathematics + Science + Social Science) + 1 optional skill subject (introduced from 2019, now offered in 24 skill courses). Language options: Two languages chosen from a list of 38 (including Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic and most major Indian languages). At least one must be Indian.. Per-paper duration: 3 hours per main paper; 2 hours for skill subjects. Passing marks: 33% aggregate (combined theory + internal assessment) per subject.
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Theory paper | 80 marks · 3-hour written exam (per main subject) |
| Internal assessment | 20 marks (3-period evaluation: pen-paper test + portfolio + subject enrichment) |
| Practical (Science) | No separate practical at Class 10 — practicals are absorbed into internal assessment |
| Skill subject (optional) | 50 marks theory + 50 marks practical (if opted; replaces lowest of 3 main subjects when calculating best-of-five) |
9-point grading scale: A1 (top 12.5% of qualified candidates), A2 (next 12.5%), B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, D2, E (failing). Grades are awarded on a relative basis — A1 always means top 12.5%, regardless of absolute marks. Marks ARE published alongside grades on the marksheet.
A student who fails 1 subject may sit a compartment exam (held in July). A student who fails 2 or more subjects must repeat the year. The supplementary attempt counts as the original exam — no separate "repeater" notation appears on the certificate.
Class 10 pass percentage was 93.6% in 2024 (girls 94.8%, boys 92.7%). The 2024 cohort across India was approximately 22 lakh registered candidates. Pass rates trend within a 90-94% band post-2018.
For Class 12 students, CBSE runs the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) — Class 12. This is the gate to undergraduate admissions, scholarship eligibility, and most foreign-university applications routed via NESO/equivalence committees.
Streams offered: Science (PCM, PCB, PCMB), Commerce (with/without Maths), Humanities (Arts). Core subjects: Choose 5 subjects: 1 mandatory language + 4 electives from your stream. A 6th additional subject is permitted (often used as a safety net — best-of-four rule applies for university admissions).. Per-paper duration: 3 hours per paper; practicals are 3 hours conducted at the school by external + internal examiners jointly. Passing marks: 33% in each subject AND 33% aggregate across theory + practical (a student passing theory but failing practical does NOT pass the subject).
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Theory paper | 70 or 80 marks (subject-dependent) · 3-hour written exam |
| Practical / project | 20 or 30 marks (lab subjects use practicals; non-lab subjects use a project + viva) |
| Internal assessment | 10 marks for languages + select non-practical subjects |
Marks are awarded as percentages; grades are calculated post-hoc using the 9-point scale (A1 to E). The marksheet shows BOTH absolute marks and grades. CBSE has not used moderation since 2017 — what you score is what you get.
Practicals at Class 12 are externally evaluated for science streams (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Biotechnology). The external examiner is appointed by CBSE from a panel of nearby schools. Project work in Commerce + Humanities is internally evaluated but moderated.
Class 12 pass percentage was 87.98% in 2024 (girls 91.52%, boys 85.12%). Approximately 16.2 lakh candidates registered. Science stream had the lowest pass rate at 86%, Humanities the highest at 90%.
| Entity | Recognition status |
|---|---|
| All Indian central universities (DU, JNU, BHU, etc.) | Direct recognition for UG admissions; eligibility via Class 12 marksheet alone |
| IITs / NITs / IIITs (via JEE) | CBSE Class 12 result is the standard reference; minimum 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST) required for IIT/NIT eligibility |
| AIIMS / NEET medical colleges | Recognised; Class 12 marks used as eligibility floor (50% for general, 40% for reserved categories) |
| NESO / SAARC universities | Recognised under bilateral equivalence |
| US universities (UG admissions) | Accepted; transcript typically converted using a 4.0 GPA scale (90%+ ≈ 4.0) |
| UK universities (UCAS) | Class 12 marksheet accepted for direct entry; some Russell Group unis require an additional foundation year unless 90%+ achieved |
| Australian universities (TAC) | Recognised; ATAR equivalence published yearly |
If you're optimising for downstream university or visa fit, recognition is the single most important field on this whole page. A board's classroom culture matters less than whether your child's transcript is accepted at the doors they want to walk through five years from now.
Affiliation is the legal recognition that lets a school issue CBSE-validated certificates. For CBSE, the process at a glance:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Schools must be registered as a society / trust / company under Section 8 (not-for-profit). Minimum 1.5 acres land (0.25 acre relaxed in metros), 18 staff including 12 trained graduate teachers, library with 2,000+ books, prescribed lab + sports infrastructure. |
| Fee range (₹) | ₹25,000 (provisional, 3 years) → ₹50,000 (regular, 5 years renewal) — plus a one-time ₹2,00,000 affiliation fee for new schools. Senior secondary upgrade is an additional ₹50,000. |
| Renewal cycle | 5 years (renewal application opens 18 months before expiry; mandatory inspection at 36-month interval) |
Key steps:
A school's affiliation status is what you, as a parent, should ask for in writing — not a verbal claim. The affiliation number is published on https://www.cbse.gov.in; that's the canonical source.
The pass-percentage trend below is compiled from each year's official board notification. Year-on-year shifts are usually driven by syllabus restoration (post-COVID), tightening of internal-assessment caps, or changes to passing rules — not raw cohort ability.
| Year | Class 10 pass % | Class 12 pass % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 93.60% | 87.98% |
| 2023 | 93.12% | 87.33% |
| 2022 | 94.40% | 92.71% |
| 2021 | 99.04% (special policy — COVID) | 99.37% (special policy — COVID) |
| 2020 | 91.46% | 88.78% |
Treat the numbers as a direction-of-travel signal. A 1–2% YoY swing is ordinary. A double-digit jump or drop almost always tracks a known policy change in that academic year.
We write this section the same way for every board because the question every parent actually asks is "does this board fit my kid", not "is this board good in absolute terms". Both lists are short on purpose.
Strengths
Limitations
There are three ways to verify a school's CBSE affiliation that don't require trusting the school's own marketing material:
A real school's CBSE affiliation number is non-secret and freely shareable. If a school refuses to give you the number in writing, that's a flag.
Different, not strictly harder. CBSE Class 10 tests a wider syllabus with shorter answers; ICSE tests a narrower syllabus with longer, language-heavy answers and stronger English emphasis. Students who write fluently and enjoy literature often find ICSE friendlier; students who like structured Math + Science problem-solving often find CBSE friendlier. Pass percentage is similar (low 90s). Where CBSE clearly wins is alignment with JEE/NEET; where ICSE clearly wins is English-medium foreign-university applications.
5 mandatory + 1 optional skill subject. The 5 are: 2 languages (one Indian) + Mathematics + Science + Social Science. The optional skill subject (e.g., Information Technology, Banking & Insurance, Web Application) is graded but its score replaces the lowest of the 3 main subjects (excluding languages) for best-of-five calculations during admission. A 7th additional subject is allowed for advanced students.
Each subject must be cleared at 33% — but for subjects with a practical component (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Painting, Physical Education), the 33% must be achieved on theory AND on practical separately. A student scoring 28% on theory and 38% on practical fails the subject even if the overall average crosses 33%. Languages: 33% in the combined paper (theory + IA). Compartment exam available for failure in 1 subject only.
Yes, universally. CBSE Class 12 marksheets are accepted by all major university systems (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, EU). Most universities apply a standard percentage→GPA conversion (90%+ ≈ 4.0 GPA, 85%+ ≈ 3.7 GPA). Some Russell Group UK universities require an additional foundation year unless the student has 90%+ overall, but this is the same standard applied to ICSE and state boards. Specialised programmes (e.g., Oxbridge, Ivy League) may also require SAT/ACT or A-level equivalent — that's a programme requirement, not a board limitation.
Three checks. (1) Search the school name on saras.cbse.gov.in — this is the canonical affiliation register. (2) Ask the school for its 7-digit affiliation number and verify on the same site. (3) Cross-check on getschoolsinfo.com/board/cbse — every CBSE-affiliated school in our index is sourced from UDISE+ government records. If the school refuses to provide the affiliation number in writing, treat it as a red flag.
CBSE prescribes NCERT textbooks as the primary reference for Class 9–12. In practice, top-quartile schools supplement NCERT with R.D. Sharma, R.S. Aggarwal, Lakhmir Singh, S. Chand and similar — particularly for Class 10 and 12 board prep. The board exam itself stays within the NCERT curriculum boundary, so a student who masters NCERT cover-to-cover can score 95%+ without supplementary texts. Supplementary texts add depth, not breadth.
CBSE phased out the original CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) in 2017 after a decade of mixed results. The current Class 10 model has a single board exam (80 marks) plus a 20-mark internal assessment broken into 3 cycles per year. The Class 12 model is similar but practical-weighted. CBSE has no plans (as of 2024) to reintroduce a full CCE-style continuous-only evaluation.
Yes — most CBSE schools accept Class 11 transfers. The student must produce a Migration Certificate from the previous board, the Class 10 marksheet, and a Transfer Certificate from the previous school. The receiving CBSE school is required to verify equivalence (most state boards are recognised); a Class 11 entrance test may be conducted at the school's discretion. Switching after Class 11 is harder — registration deadlines tighten in October.
Three-tier process within 30 days of result declaration: (1) Verification — checking the addition of marks (₹500/subject); (2) Re-evaluation of marks already given (₹100/question); (3) Photocopy of evaluated answer book (₹500/subject) — this lets you see the marker's working. Marks can go up or down on revaluation. Roughly 1.5–2% of revaluation requests result in mark changes per recent CBSE statistics.
NEP 2020 implementation continues to roll into CBSE: phased introduction of two board exam attempts per year (announced for Class 10), stronger competency-based questions (target: 50% of all questions by 2025), and the 5+3+3+4 schooling structure for foundational years. Watch the CBSE annual circular for implementation dates — historically these are announced in February for the coming academic year.
