TL;DR. The International Baccalaureate is a globally recognised non-profit education foundation headquartered in Geneva, founded in 1968 to provide a standard university-preparatory diploma for internationally mobile families. India hosts approximately 225 IB World Schools running one or more of the three programmes — the Primary Years Programme (3–12), Middle Years Programme (11–16) and the Diploma Programme (16–19). The Diploma Programme is the most-recognised — six subjects, three core elements (Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, CAS) and a 45-point ceiling. Annual fees in India typically range ₹3 lakh to ₹15 lakh per year.

| Class 12 (Sr Sec) — exam name |
India has 14,71,453 schools in the UDISE+ register (snapshot 2026-05-02). Of those, 248 schools report IB affiliation on the Class 10 (Sec) board field, and 193 schools report it on the Class 12 (Sr Sec) board field.
That puts IB's share at roughly 0.02% of all schools nationally at Class 10 — small in headline terms, but every one of those schools concentrates in the demand pockets where parents are actively shopping for boards.
Note: the UDISE+ snapshot rolls IB and Cambridge schools into a single "International Board" bucket — the 248 figure covers both. IB alone accounts for roughly half (around 225 schools as per the IB World Schools directory); the rest is the other international board.
| Rank | State | IB schools at Class 10 | State's total schools |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Maharashtra | 117 | 1,13,589 |
| 2 | Tamil Nadu | 46 | 59,840 |
| 3 | Telangana | 15 | 47,725 |
| 4 | Gujarat | 13 | 55,937 |

Before drilling into IB specifics, here's the national context. These numbers come straight from the Ministry of Education's Report on UDISE+ 2024-25 — the official school-system census published by the Department of School Education & Literacy. They apply to every board in India, and they're the benchmark you should hold IB (or any board) up against:
| National metric (UDISE+ 2024-25) | Value |
|---|---|
| Total schools in India | 14.71 lakh |
| Total enrolment (all levels) | 24.69 crore |
| Total teachers | 1.01 crore |

International Baccalaureate conducts the Middle Years Programme (MYP) — concluding eAssessment at age 16 (loosely equivalent to Class 10) for Class 10 students. The exam is the legal terminus of compulsory schooling in India under the RTE Act and serves three purposes simultaneously: it certifies a student's secondary education, gates streamed entry into Class 11, and feeds equivalence checks for international transfers.
Subjects: 8 subject groups studied across MYP Years 1–5: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, Design. The eAssessment at MYP Year 5 covers a learner-selected portfolio plus on-screen examinations in core subjects.. Language options: IB World Schools in India typically offer English as Language A (Language and Literature) and Hindi or French / Spanish as Language B (Language Acquisition). Some schools offer Mandarin, German or regional Indian languages depending on enrolment.. Per-paper duration: On-screen exams are 2 hours each, taken on assigned dates in May.. Passing marks: MYP eAssessment grades range 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) per subject. Achievement of grade 3 or above in 6 subject groups + completion of the Personal Project + Service as Action together earn the IB MYP Certificate..
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| On-screen examinations | For Language and Literature, Sciences, Mathematics, Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition — 2-hour digital assessments |
| ePortfolio | Compulsory for Arts, Design and Physical and Health Education — student-curated digital portfolio submitted to IB |
| Personal Project | A long-form independent project completed in MYP Year 5 — externally moderated by IB |
| Service as Action | Compulsory community-service component running through Years 4 and 5 |
Each subject is graded 1–7. The MYP Certificate awards a total out of a maximum of 56 (8 subjects × 7). Most universities and Class 11 / Class 12 admissions in India use the equivalent percentage band: a 5 in MYP is roughly equivalent to 60% in CBSE Class 10.
IB does not run compartments. A student who fails the MYP Certificate may continue into the IB Diploma Programme — DP is independent of MYP completion. Students may also re-sit individual MYP subjects in the next May session if their school permits.
IB does not publish per-country MYP pass percentages. Globally, MYP eAssessment is graded on a fixed scale rather than a normalised pass percentage, so a per-cycle pass-pct figure is not meaningful.
For Class 12 students, IB runs the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) — final examination at end of DP Year 2 (loosely equivalent to Class 12). This is the gate to undergraduate admissions, scholarship eligibility, and most foreign-university applications routed via NESO/equivalence committees.
Streams offered: No fixed stream — pick one subject from each of 6 groups; group choices effectively replace stream lock-in. Core subjects: Six subjects, one from each of: (1) Studies in Language and Literature, (2) Language Acquisition, (3) Individuals and Societies, (4) Sciences, (5) Mathematics, (6) The Arts (or a second from Group 2/3/4). Three subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Plus three compulsory core elements: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).. Per-paper duration: Most exams run 1 to 2.5 hours per paper; HL papers are longer and more analytical than SL papers.. Passing marks: Minimum 24 points (out of 45) AND no failing conditions: at least 12 points across HL subjects, at least 9 across SL subjects, no grade 1 anywhere, no more than two grades of 2, no more than three grades of 3, and a pass in TOK and EE (graded jointly A–E)..
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| External examination | Per subject — 2 to 3 papers per subject taken in May (some November sessions); ranges from 75% to 80% of subject mark |
| Internal assessment (IA) | Per subject — lab work, oral presentations, written commentaries, mathematical investigations; 20% to 25% of subject mark, externally moderated by IB |
| Theory of Knowledge (TOK) | A 1,600-word essay on prescribed titles + a 10-minute exhibition presentation |
| Extended Essay (EE) | A 4,000-word independent research essay supervised by a school teacher; submitted to IB for external evaluation |
| Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) | 150+ hours of CAS engagement spanning the 2 years of DP — non-graded but compulsory for the Diploma |
Each subject graded 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Subject total: 42 points (6 × 7). TOK + EE together contribute up to 3 bonus points based on a published matrix. Maximum diploma score: 45. Globally, an average IB DP score is around 30–32; a 38+ is competitive for top universities; 40+ is exceptional.
Internal Assessment (IA) is compulsory for all 6 subjects — this includes lab investigations in sciences, mathematical explorations, oral examinations in languages, and historical investigations in History. IAs are marked by the school teacher and externally moderated by IB; sample IAs are uploaded for moderation each session.
Globally, the IB DP pass rate (24+ points and no failing conditions) typically runs 78–82% per session. Indian IB schools tend to score above the global mean — average DP score in Indian schools is often 32–34, with several international schools reporting cohort averages of 36+.
| Entity | Recognition status |
|---|---|
| AIU (Association of Indian Universities) | IB Diploma recognised as equivalent to Class 12 from any Indian board for university admission |
| Indian central universities (DU, JNU, etc.) | Direct recognition for UG admission via the AIU equivalence; typical equivalence band is 5 in DP ≈ 60% in CBSE Class 12 |
| IITs / NITs / IIITs (via JEE) | IB Diploma accepted; the 75% aggregate (65% for SC/ST/PwD) eligibility floor is calculated from the IB equivalence — typically requires DP score of 30+ |
| AIIMS / NEET medical colleges | IB accepted via AIU equivalence; many DP students prefer foreign medical-college pathways given the syllabus mismatch with NEET |
| Every major UK university (UCAS) | Direct recognition; Russell Group typically asks for 36–40 points with specific HL grades |
| US universities (UG admissions) | Universally accepted; many universities award college credit for HL subjects scored 5+ |
| Australian / Canadian / EU universities |
If you're optimising for downstream university or visa fit, recognition is the single most important field on this whole page. A board's classroom culture matters less than whether your child's transcript is accepted at the doors they want to walk through five years from now.
Affiliation is the legal recognition that lets a school issue IB-validated certificates. For IB, the process at a glance:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | A school must complete a candidate-school phase (typically 2–3 years), demonstrate alignment with IB philosophy, employ IB-trained teachers in every subject group, and pass an IB authorisation visit. The school must run only one programme initially (PYP, MYP or DP) and may apply to add programmes later. There is no land or square-footage minimum imposed by IB — instead, IB looks at curriculum implementation and pedagogy. |
| Fee range (₹) | Application fee approximately USD 4,000 ( |
| Renewal cycle | Continuous evaluation; programme evaluation visits every 5 years. Schools must maintain IB World School status by submitting annual data, ensuring teacher-training compliance, and hosting IB visiting committees on cycle. |
Key steps:
A school's affiliation status is what you, as a parent, should ask for in writing — not a verbal claim. The affiliation number is published on https://www.ibo.org; that's the canonical source.
We write this section the same way for every board because the question every parent actually asks is "does this board fit my kid", not "is this board good in absolute terms". Both lists are short on purpose.
Strengths
Limitations
There are three ways to verify a school's IB affiliation that don't require trusting the school's own marketing material:
A real school's IB affiliation number is non-secret and freely shareable. If a school refuses to give you the number in writing, that's a flag.
The IB DP is a 2-year programme spread across DP Year 1 and DP Year 2, while CBSE Class 12 is a 1-year board exam after Class 11. IB requires 6 subjects + 3 core elements (TOK, EE, CAS); CBSE typically requires 5 subjects with a stream lock-in. IB has external IA moderation; CBSE has minimal internal assessment at Class 12. IB is graded 1–7 per subject (max 45 total); CBSE uses percentages. AIU treats them as equivalent for university admission, but the pedagogy and workload are quite different — IB demands more independent writing and research; CBSE demands deeper textbook mastery for board exams.
Annual school fees for IB DP in Indian schools typically range ₹3 lakh (entry-level) to ₹15 lakh (established international schools), with the metro median around ₹6L–₹10L. On top of school fees, IB exam fees are charged separately — approximately USD 70–120 per subject for the May / November session, totalling USD 500–800 (~₹40K–₹65K) for the full DP examination. Many families also invest in supplementary tuition because IB pedagogy differs from what most Indian parents experienced themselves.
Yes. AIU (Association of Indian Universities) recognises the IB Diploma as equivalent to Class 12 from any Indian school board. Indian central universities (DU, JNU, BHU, Jamia, etc.), IITs, NITs, IIITs, NLUs and most state universities accept IB DP for UG admission via AIU equivalence — typically 5 in DP ≈ 60% in CBSE Class 12. For specific programmes like IIT (via JEE), the 75% aggregate eligibility translates to roughly 30+ DP points. The official AIU equivalence circular is published annually and is the document admissions officers will reference.
Approximately 225 IB World Schools in India (as of 2024), spread across all three programmes — PYP, MYP and DP. The largest concentrations are in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Kolkata. Some schools run only PYP or only DP; others run all three programmes end-to-end. The IB World School directory at ibo.org/programmes/find-an-ib-school is the canonical list. Indian IB schools are predominantly private, English-medium and tuition-fee-driven; there is no government IB school in India.
Yes, but with extra preparation. JEE and NEET are based on the NCERT / CBSE syllabus, which differs from IB Higher Level syllabi in coverage, problem-style and depth. IB DP students who target JEE / NEET typically take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics / Biology at HL and supplement with NCERT-aligned coaching from Class 11 onwards. The IB DP score itself is accepted for the 75% / 50% eligibility floors; the entrance exam, however, must be cracked separately. Many IB students choose to apply to foreign STEM programmes instead, where the IB advantage is direct.
These are the three core elements of the IB DP. TOK (Theory of Knowledge) is a 1,600-word essay on prescribed titles plus an exhibition presentation — it explores how we know what we know across disciplines. EE (Extended Essay) is a 4,000-word independent research paper supervised by a school teacher and externally evaluated by IB. CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is 150+ hours of structured engagement across the 2 years — non-graded but compulsory for the Diploma. Together, TOK + EE earn up to 3 bonus points on top of the 42 subject points, taking the maximum DP score to 45.
In IB DP, three subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). HL subjects are studied at greater depth — typically 240 teaching hours over 2 years vs 150 hours for SL. HL exams have more papers, longer exam duration, and a more analytical style. Universities often specify HL grade requirements for direct programme entry — for example, an engineering programme might require HL Mathematics + HL Physics at grade 6, while a humanities programme might require HL English Literature at grade 5. Picking HL subjects strategically — based on your target university programme — is one of the most important decisions in DP.
Each of the 6 subjects is graded 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), giving a maximum subject total of 42. TOK and EE are graded jointly using a published A–E matrix that adds up to 3 bonus points. Maximum total: 45. Minimum to pass the Diploma: 24 points AND no failing conditions (at least 12 across HL, at least 9 across SL, no grade 1 anywhere, limited grade 2s and 3s, and a pass in TOK and EE). Globally, the average DP score is around 30–32; 38+ is competitive for top universities; 40+ is exceptional. Indian IB schools tend to score above the global mean.
No. MYP completion is not a prerequisite for IB DP enrolment. Many Indian students join IB DP from CBSE / ICSE Class 10 directly — schools assess them on Class 10 marks, an interview and sometimes a placement test. MYP is valuable if your child is at an IB school from primary level, because it builds the inquiry-based learning and writing skills DP demands. But DP is fully accessible to students coming from CBSE, ICSE, state boards or international curricula at the end of Class 10.
A practical heuristic. Choose IB if your child wants breadth (6 subjects across all groups), enjoys long-form writing and research (TOK + EE), and is targeting US liberal-arts colleges or globally portable admissions. Choose Cambridge (IGCSE / A Level) if your child wants subject-depth flexibility (3–4 A Level subjects, A* grading), is targeting UK universities specifically, or prefers a more exam-led structure with clearer subject specialisation. Both are accepted equivalent to Class 12 by AIU; both are recognised globally. Cambridge tends to be slightly less expensive in India and more widely available; IB tends to be more pedagogically distinctive.
